Nail Fungus, or Onychomycosis, is a medical condition created by fungal spores (dermaphytes) living underneath, or around, the nail bed of a finger or toe. The area underneath the nail provides ideal environmental conditions for the growth of nail fungus. While healthy nails normally protect our fingers and toes, fungal infections can hide under nails and make it hard for treatments to reach the site of the infection.

Do You Have Nail Fungus?

A fungus will often begin by attacking the nail plate, causing it to become discolored – usually a yellowish color – although fungus can also manifest itself as black, green, or white. The nail may also become “cloudy” or brittle. It is common for nails to begin to flake off, and as the condition worsens, the cosmetic symptoms may worsen and the nail may begin to thicken.
Once a nail has been infected, only a long-term treatment can cure the underlying fungal infection and eliminate the source of the fungus. While treatment times vary, we recommend treating the nails for about four to eight months. Treatment should continue while the new nail grows into ensure that no remnants of the fungus remain.
How Do You Treat Nail Fungus?
Treating nail fungus is very difficult, because the anti-fungal agents must permeate the nail bed to kill the fungus lurking below. There are many methods to treat fungus; for example, oral medications are available, and can be a great way to combat nail fungus. Unfortunately, they are usually very expensive, and it is common for insurance companies to refuse to cover the cost of oral anti-fungal medication They can also carry an array of unwanted side effects – some of which are deadly. Because of these potentially dangerous side-effects, many patients opt for less hazardous treatment alternatives.
Surgery is the most invasive way to terminate fungus. Many surgeries require the entire nail be removed. Surgery is also the most expensive treatment for nail fungus.
Topical treatments are the safest and easiest way to treat nail fungus. Unfortunately, a lot of the products that are on the market don’t work because they contain a weak combination of anti-fungal agents. It’s important that the topical system you choose has proven ingredients to fight fungus and heal the nail. When using topical treatments, make sure you work the treatment into the cuticle and under the nail bed.
